Catford is a district in south east London, in the borough of Lewisham. It is between Hither Green and Perry Vale, and north of Beckenham. It has two railway stations, Catford and Catford Bridge. It is about 30 minutes away from St Pancras International and about 10 miles from Biggin Hill Airport.
Catford developed in 1857, when the railway came to the area. Before then it was a group of small rural villages and farmland. Further homes were built in the 1890s, and a second railway station was built. Many of these homes were built by a private landowner Archibald Corbett, and the estates are laid out in a distinctive grid. Catford was damaged badly during World War II, and much of the area had to be redeveloped.
Catford has several shops, pubs and restaurants. Most of the shops are in Catford Shopping Centre, which features a distinctive fibreglass cat sculpture. There is also a range of shops on the high street and a popular street market. The area has a number of pubs and several restaurants selling a variety of different food.
Catford has many green spaces. One of these is Mountsfield Park, a large park in the centre of Catford. It has a variety of different sports pitches, a playground, ornamental gardens and a bandstand. Mountsfield Park hosts the People’s Day festival every year, which features music and craft stalls. Another park in area is Ladywell Fields. This is made up of three fields, and has a river running through it. It has tennis courts, two playgrounds and a nature reserve, and is particularly popular with cyclists and runners.
